ESNG meeting – 20 December 2023

‘Twas the last meeting before Christmas – and a surprising nine people turned out for a little light relief.  Good to see Terry back again, and a welcome to Alex.

And some of Sean and Lucas’ stock….

So that’s all our meetings over till 2024.  A solid year’s running.  We’ve missed just a few meetings with too few members to set up the layout, but most have had a nucleus of six or seven members around to play trains.  We’ll see what 2024 brings.

I’m only here for the gluhwein – 3

Day 3

Last day. Murky and wet – all photos taken around 9.30am. Took trams to Messe/Deutz Bf but on leaving station by wrong exit ended up doing a round tour of the Messe complex. Eventually found right way out and walked across the Hollenzollen railway bridge to Hbf.  Will walk back through city centre to enjoy Kaffee und Kunche before returning to hotel, which they are kindly keeping for me even though I have checked out. Around midday will head back to Hbf for train to Dusseldorf Airport hopefully by a quicker train. Due to land Heathrow around 4.30 UK time.

The rather murky Rhine in Cologne….

Hollenzollen Brucke

And to finish this little trip, here is the evidence – Ron’s real reason for the visit?

To say nothing of this!!

I’m only here for the gluhwein – 2

Day 2

Clear but chilly. Took tram to Hbf and walked down the river to the market at the Chocolate Museum. The market was closed when I arrived around 10.30 and after having coffee and cake it was only half open so a wasted journey. Made my way round the markets at Rudolfplatz and Neumarkt. Then back to Hbf so a sit down. Then carried on to the Dom, Altstadt and Heumarkt markets before final Islington with another coffee and cake. One good thing is that I managed to pick up 2 gluhwein glasses. Now back in hotel for a quick freshen up before going out for something to eat. Have already checked in for my flight home.

I’m only here for the gluhwein – 1

Having just left Germany, we’re back again.  You can’t keep Ron away from the gluhwein!  The usual mixture of trains, tourism, and booze follow…..

Left home early in rain at 0345 with Allan, who drove me to Heathrow for my flight to Dusseldorf, where we landed 10 minutes [early or late?] Found train going to Cologne so jumped on only to find it was a local calling at all stations the long way round and took over an hour to reach Cologne. At this time weather was still dry so found temporary tourist office and purchased a 48 hour pass, which I found out gives me a 10% discount on food and drink at Kaufhof department store. Travelled 4 stops on tram to my hotel to deposit my case as I was over 3 hours early for 1500 check in. As I left to go into city for coffee and cake it had started to drizzle but when I got off it was a downpour. Afterwards took a quick walk through city centre before going back to hotel to check in. Am now drying out in my room before returning to city for evening meal and Xmas markets – well have not had a gluhwein today. [YET]

Trams.

Trains and Cologne Hbf….

And the hunt for the gluhwien……

After a meal took a walk around some of the Christmas markets. Busiest I have even seen them. Long queues for gluhwein and only managed to get one – note to self must do better tomorrow.

Stuttgart 2023 #5 – Tea and Lego

A highlight of the show is the Thursday night ‘lock in’ party.  After the show closes for the night, tables are laid out along one aisle, and each country presents its food and drink for inspection and consumption.  There are some highlights – the German US N-Track chilli was wonderful this year.  And the Swiss raclette.  Some may also enjoy the Danish picked curried raw herring, washed down with schnapps, but I wouldn’t know about that.

As Brexit doesn’t allow us to take out our usual barrel of Sussex ale, Richard came up with the idea of a traditional English tea shop.  This went down very well.  Perhaps not so much the tea, but the wonders of Eccles cakes, battenberg, and cherry bakewell  were a new experience for some of our European brethren.  In fact, there wasn’t much left for the team to eat on Friday.  So here we are…..

And here are some of the other offerings….

20231123_18375420231123_183812

While we were there, Claus Ballsiepet celebrated his 50th birthday.  Claude is from Minitrix, and a few years ago generously donated the expander tracks that we are currently using on the layout.

There was, however, a nasty pollution incident in the Mosel valley….

Changing the subject completely, the balcony around the hall was full of Lego.  In fact, the display started outside Hall 1, with this half size Bugatti supercar.  Lot of blue bricks here….

Two enormous ships (the battleship is one of the WWII trio that included the Bismark.)

Construction machinery….

And some fantastic (and realistic) trains…

Star Wars (I think…..)

Well, that’s Stuttgart done and dusted for another year.  Time to get a little modelling done before Christmas?

Stuttgart 2023 #4 – Other layouts

As usual, there were a number of stand-alone layouts invited to the show.  The following photos capture a number of them – and there was some inspiring modelling to be seen.

Fleischmann brought along their N-gauge layout based on the Mosel valley, where river and railway run beneath extensive vineyards.  The scene is compressed, of course, and the hillsides are steeper than real life, but it looks so right!  Just a simple tail-chaser, but beautifully done.

Lemiso-Werke are a company making models in a range of scales, but they have an exquisite layout to promote their wares.  I saw pictures of this Nm layout last year.  It’s even better seen in the flesh.  Snow is such a difficult thing to model well.

Then there is this complex harbour scene, and I especially liked the very detailed ships.

But the piece de resistance must have been this large canal lock – rather like the ones you can see near Northwich in Cheshire.  I kept going back to have another look!

20231123_201417IMG_1175IMG_1176

A small portion of the enormous layout of Stuttgart’s railways was on show.  This layout was a lifetime labour of love by a Stuttgart modeller.  When he died, most of the layout was saved (with help from the local NCI members amongst others) and parts are now on show near the new Stuttgart station (than has finally opened.)

Next post, it’s party time!

ESNG meeting – 6 December 2023

We pause posts on the Stuttgart saga for a normal club meeting report….

It turned out to be a busy evening, with eight members and a visitor – welcome Terry, and hope we didn’t put you off too much!  It was good to see Ian, whose visit might have been to collect Lily’s strange German honey that we had been tasked to find whilst in Stuttgart.  Just a few photos….

The usual suspects…..

20231206_201437

I couldn’t work out what to bring to run, but I pulled my Pullman rake off the shelf (probably for the first time for several years) and it ambled around behind a Class 40 all evening.  Saggers Sidings and two of the corners seemed none the worse for a trip to Germany and back.

20231206_194242

Chris had some new coaches to sandwich between two Class 73’s.

20231206_19431420231206_194349

Simon tested this Minitrix Atlantic, also a Stuttgart purchase, and then ran his Hiawatha express…..

Stuttgart 2023 #3 – Modules

Today is just a bit of a photo dump of some of the many modules on show.  Just my choice of pictures, and ones that caught my eye – most I can’t remember where they came from!

The helix was there to get trains across an aisle at high level.  The holding fiddle yard for it was just behind our operating position.

The Danish mega-junction.

A Greek archaeological theme here….

The Belgian race-track!  Simple, but realistic in its simplicity.

In contrast, some very detailed scenes on these modules….

Town….

And country….

Nm….

And two rather interesting end loop ideas – a double loop from Denmark, and a junction loop from Belgium that neatly swaps right hand to left hand running.  I understand that the Danish loop needs some major motive power to work!

Next time, a look at some of the inspiring stand-alone layouts at the show.

Stuttgart 2023 #2 – The ESNG contribution

Today’s just a pictorial guide to the modules on our branch off the main layout spine.  We start with Richard, and the German airbase, then a bridge, and a demolition site…..

And his distribution depot….

Moving onto my modules, starting with the USAF airbase….

The ‘joker’ module (to shift the running lines from one side of the board to the other).  Note the T-rex!

The clubhouse.  This is a model of a real building in Switzerland, but we wish it really was our clubhouse.  A few cameos in the car park identify a few club members and interests (curry.)

And the junction between double track NCI and four track N-mod operation…

Round our club corner, and next was Saggers Sidings.  The punters liked my bubble car train parked on one siding, and Allan’s Thomas and Toby on the other.

Round another corner and finally we linked up with the West Sussex group layout.  This suffered a few teething troubles, but Ian and co. got through the week successfully.

The last afternoon, my modules suffered an infestation….  Dinsdale!!

Next time, some pictures of some of the other modules on display.
