Epping Ongar railway and bus running day

Ron has been on the buses!

Visited the above for their Country Bus Running Day. Unfortunately train times did not coincide well with bus time so only managed a return DMU trip from North Weald to Epping Forest, which is the limit of the line towards Epping and where you cannot alight or board a train.

ESNG meeting – 25 February 2024

Sunday afternoon, and seven members turned up to play trains.  Not bad at all, as two regulars were missing.  Derek was under at least a three line whip to celebrate Yvonne’s 80th, and Simon was watching Chelsea (lose) in a cup final.

We had another afternoon with too many derailments, and that prompted some discussion as to how to improve things.  We did, I think, come up with a few reasonable ideas, so we may start our Wednesday working parties again.

ESNG meeting – 21 February 2024

Just a few photos today – I must have spent too much time talking!  Eight members came along and occupied the four running tracks.

20240221_194152

Chris’ lovely ‘Jaffa Cake’ EMU had some difficulty staying on the track.  It’s strange – some days everything runs well, another they can’t stay on the rails.  (Bit like the members, really.)

Rolling stock from three countries in one picture!

Allan produced this colourful Class 66 and ran a short (for him) / long (for us) coal train.

We all seemed to have run all we wanted to by 9:15, so we packed up and went home.  Back on Sunday for another meeting.  I’m waiting to see who has the first Revolution Class 59 on show.

A few modelling ideas….

If you haven’t room for a layout, a diorama could be just the thing.  And no wiring to worry about.  These are by Luis Hermosilla, culled from Facebook.

Some interesting bridges in Philadelphia and tight curves in Pittsburgh for trolleys and interurbans….

And how the Central of New Jersey main line crossed the Lehigh River – straight into a tunnel.  Unfortunately disused, but put that on your layout and wait for the nay-sayers!

Potpourri #1095

Another ESNG meeting tonight, but in the mean time, here are some more random internet finds….

A bit of culture, as John Betjeman goes by train from King’s Lynn to Hunstanton.  Some lovely modelling ideas here, at this link.

Some random Jago Hazzard.  At the moment, he’s taking a well earned break from these fun and instructive videos.

Making a very small layout (in Japanese).

And to finish, some more of those wonderful Javan sugar cane railways…

Tonbridge MRC show 2024

Last Saturday was the Tonbridge show.  One of the largest one day shows, certainly in the south-east, and always a good one.  And it’s popular, as it has one of the longest queues to get in that I’ve seen!

Mr Dawes was taking the train to Tonbridge, as last year, and I considered going along for a pleasant train ride and a good show.  However, when I looked at the layouts there, most, if not all, of the layouts I wanted to see had been at the exhibitions I had gone to through January.  The exception was a layout built and operated by an old friend (going back to school days.)  So I decided to stay at home, and in the end got a little modelling done as well as some other jobs.

But Allan has sent me some pictures of a selection of layouts – most of my favourites included too.  We’ll start with Blackmoor (OO9), Lynton & Barnstable in the 1930’s.

23ef3e9c-75bf-46ea-b3c5-ecf7b0bcca2f

Plant City (HO).  Miami switching on a large scale.  It’s a big layout giving a really spacious feel with quite a simple track plan.  And if you get tired of the switching, you can look for alligators.

Elbow Lane (OO) is a compact layout, with an EMU service and a parcels depot.  I really like the urban grot, and the buildings in the background.

982a7dfd-bf77-4b71-a1a5-5c66eaa35efbe23d2d84-ded5-4bd3-9988-f990855d24fa

Bear Creek (N) sounds, and is, American!

Southwark Bridge (N) needs no introduction (see previous exhibition posts!)

d13b4fc2-4722-4885-861a-dbead802198d

The Lemanis Light Railway (OO9) has some interesting details.  Note how the giraffe is pushing the wire fence down to get to some better grass….

Ospringe (St.Peter) and Water Lane (N)….

Norge (HO).  I’ve seen this layout several times, but being based in Norway always makes for interest – different trains and some exotic scenic details!

Obbekaer, rural Denmark in P87.  Something different again, and both very simple and very satisfying!

Rossiter Rise has also been doing the rounds of exhibitions recently.  And always worth another look.

Another favourite of mine, City Basin Goods (N).  It was a few years ago that this layout came to the ESNG exhibition (2018 according to the plaque on the front of the layout.)

Kinlochlaggen (N) seems to be everywhere at the moment!

And to finish, some real trains in Tonbridge yard…

London calling!

Pure tourism today, with a few photos from Allan’s recent trip up and down the Thames.  There are a few well known landmarks to be seen, as well as the view of a couple of railway stations from the water.  Back to railways next time…..

Views.  The Cutty Sark at Greenwich was a childhood favourite visit….

Bridges….

Stations (Cannon Street & Blackfriars)….

HMS Belfast…..

Cleopatra’s Needle and The Tower….

The National Centre for Mismanagement…

And finally, the wonderfully named Battersea Power Station Station….

Ashford MRC Exhibition, 2024, Tenterden

Allan sent me some photos from this show – no identification for some of them, though.

I’ve seen Melton Mowbray North (N) before (and recognised it).  I’ve always liked the buildings and the spacious, scale-sized, goods yard.

Another familiar layout is West Sussex’ Lyme Regis (N).

A neat little Scottish layout in N….

And three other unknowns!

I recognised Quevy (N) by the snow and the blue lighting!

Ian’s Small ‘N Working are also unmistakable (as is the hairless head….)

Potpourri #1094

Well, I’ve run out of exhibitions, club meetings, and bird watching expeditions.  So it’s back to the usual odds and ends that have caught my eye….

Returning to the theme of monochrome layouts, I was very taken by this photo of Tunbridge Wells Central, by Neil Nevinson.  Vastly atmospheric, perhaps with a few photoshopped highlights (?)  Black and white photography at its best, and not a train in sight.

tunbridgewellscentralneilnevinson

Also in black and white, here’s Aldgate in 1902.  You can almost smell the grime!  Aldgate in this era would make an interesting model, and it has some Minories like features.

aldgate1902

A loco of similar vintage, but the photo is taken in colour, 50 years later.  A Beattie well tank shunting at Wadebridge.

beattiewadebridge

And again of similar vintage, a very old picture of Holborn Viaduct.

holborn_2

Not a micro layout by any stretch of the imagination.  This HO module(s) of the Reading river bridge is gigantic.  I assume they will add some scenery across the river at ground level, and this will be quite something and a great place to watch the trains go by.

readingbridgemodule

I do wish someone would make a ready-to-run N gauge model!  A North Shore Electroliner.  I sold my HO one, as I decided that I would never use it, but a little one…..  that would be different.

electroliner

My favourite narrow gauge railway is the Lynton & Barnstable, as it’s not ‘twee’ at all and is a ‘real’ railway.  The colourisation has gone a bit off in the greens and reds in places, but this is a lovely bit of restored film.

Except perhaps Javan sugar cane railways!

Finally it’s Valentine’s Day today.  Just a polite reminder….

ESNG meeting – 11 February 2024

I was a few minutes late getting to open the hall, but it was open and people were getting the modules out to set up.  My excuse was simple – I sneaked up to Holmethorpe Industrial Estate to see a flock of Waxwings.  This gorgeous bird is an erratic winter visitor, and this little flock of 30 or so were demolishing berries off some bushes.  (Photo Patrick Venables.)

waxwing_patrick_venables

Meanwhile, back at the railway club, people kept pouring in.  We ended up with 13 members and 2 visitors and it was a busy afternoon on the tracks and a sociable one off them.

Sean’s all-singing, all-dancing DCC Azuma sounded horribly realistic as it trundled around the layout.  There’s something fascinating about fast expresses crawling along (that doesn’t apply to small shunters going very fast….)

20240211_142743

Simon’s very long Southern Pacific Sunset Limited was running very well – and mostly staying coupled and on the track.

Neil’s lovely Revolution Trans-Pennine stock.  They seemed to be running well, too.

A variety of freight trains….

20240211_14290020240211_14295220240211_14354120240211_14512120240211_145137

And Sean’s ballast train, headed by a very realistic sounding Class 37….

20240211_15135020240211_151354

Finally, Lucas’ Northern DMU’s.

20240211_16400920240211_164900

And the afternoon finished with the inevitable curry.  Not forgetting Brian’s video….

ESNG meeting – 7 February 2024

Once again, seven members turned up for club night, but we were graced by two visitors – welcome to Ben and Steve, and hope that we didn’t put you off too much.  Not many photos, as I spent too much of the evening talking!

I last ran this tanker train and it wouldn’t stay on the track.  But with an N Class Mogul at it’s head, it ambled around for much of the evening with no attention needed at all.

20240207_201422

Simon was running this Piko USATC 65-DE-19A.  I saw this model in Stuttgart, and wondered whether Simon would buy one.  These early US diesels were exported to Europe post-war to help put the railways back together.  But they can be used just as well on an American layout.  Simon also ran this Dapol 9F 2-10-0, that he had bought second hand (probably to convert into an American loco.)  He insisted I took a picture, as most unusually for this model, it ran impeccably.

20240207_20034720240207_203244

Simon also ran this old-timer.  An unpowered loco, propelled by a motorised coach behind.

20240207_210312

Derek was still trying to keep his coaches upright, even with their new bogies!

20240207_203239

Terry also went American (for a while.)

20240207_200408

The OO9 section of the club (Terry) then met and ran this rather interesting train.

20240207_21160720240207_211615

And a brief workbench report from home.  I decided to keep my existing baseboard, so knocked the extension that I didn’t like off the end, and replaced the embankment section with one for the revised track layout.  Next job will be to replace the track…..

20240204_171435

This old picture of Baker Street station is almost a real life Minories…..
