Canterbury MRS exhibition 2025 #2

Today’s layouts will be presented in alphabetical order, to avoid excessive favouritism!  We start with Albert Street Parcels (OO).  A nice little shunting layout, imagining that the viewer is standing on a platform in a large station, looking over to the parcels depot.

Jane’s Creek (EM), models the area around Janes’ Creek, Strood, Rochester, around 1920.  It is compressed to 2/3 full size to make it fit the owner’s house and car.  Great to see some pre-grouping modelling, and the sailing barges are lovely models in themselves.

On to Llanfair Caereinion (OO9) a scale model of the line’s terminus in GWR days.  No ‘twee’ narrow gauge modelling here, but a real railway trying to make ends meet.  And full marks to Andy Cundick, who was very happy to chat whilst operating the layout!

I’ve seen Obbekaer (P87) a number of times, but will always stop for a look.  A model of a Danish branch line in the 1950’s, it’s a very simple layout but the rather different rolling stock and railway plant are worth a close inspection.

And finally for today, Rossiter Rise (OO), London Underground and British Railways steam and electric.  Another familiar layout, but again worth perusing for the eclectic selection of rolling stock, nearly all kit or scratch built.

Canterbury MRS exhibition 2025 #1

Saturday morning, five ESNG members filled Allan’s van, and we headed east for the Canterbury exhibition.  As the approached Canterbury, one of the two Derek’s commented, “Not long since we were down this way.”  The quick answer came, “No, it’s almost exactly a year since we visited the last show here!”  I’m not sure where 2024 went.

Next question.  “Do we go straight to the show, or do we stop for breakfast?”  Silly question, really, as the Cha(i)rman’s nose for a good café is exceptional.  So after an excellent full English, we arrived at the school to look at a few trains.  It was another excellent show, and I’ve spread the pictures over three posts to give it a proper write up.

Just the two layouts today.  I’ve seen Copper Wort (OO), based on the Burton-on-Trent brewery railways a number of times, but will always look again.  Saturday was a real treat, as the barriers were very close to the layout, and I was able to look closely at the wonderful buildings and get some close up photos.  As below…..

The second layout was Two Bridges up Sidings (OO).  I loved this layout for its simplicity, and because it models railway close to home.  With a Gatwick Express passing through, it’s set somewhere between Redhill and Gatwick, in the period that we first moved to Redhill.  Lots of EMUs and blue diesels!

ESNG meeting – 15 January 2025

It was a busy end of week, and I forgot to write this meeting up!  With so many meetings in quick succession, I wasn’t sure how many would turn up, but we ended up with a very respectable eight members present.

I actually ran a train before competition for the lines got too frenzied.  New, and excellent, Sonic car transporters.  Very nice models.  Not as free running as some, but they will free up with use.  I will build up a ‘club night box’ with these and a few carriages.

I didn’t run the rather nice Sonic Vanwides that arrived in the same big box.

ESNG meeting – 12 January 2025

The temperature crept above zero and the ESNG members came out in force!  10 members, two visiting friends from the West Sussex mob, and a smallish offspring.  Our treasurer recovered enough from his cold to attend and collect all that lovely money.

I turned up a few minutes late to see everyone already putting up a very large 4×0 layout.  Obviously, I’m the lazy one who wants a small circuit!

Potpourri #1121

I’m not sure that I like this cold weather.  My modified shoulder seems to ache when it gets cold – I guess I shall have to live with it.  At least the lounge is warm for a quiet read, and the loft workshop warms up quickly with a fan heater.  I should have been making trains, but got distracted from my ‘Walrus’ by a ‘Myrt’.  I have a soft spot for WW2 Japanese aircraft, and this reconnaissance plane could outrun Allied fighters such as the Wildcat.  It’s a big plane, too, larger than the Whirlwind parked next to it.  A Hasegawa  1/48 kit from 2002 and although a little dated in some detailing and engineering, it goes together very well with just a scrape of filler for a few joints and has excellent surface detail.  I’m afraid my stash of Japanese aircraft kits also includes a Zero and a couple of float planes.

On to a few random thoughts.  It’s a pity this part-figure is only made in 4mm scale.  It would look rather good on the layout.

The District Line in 1910.  It’s interesting how the stations resemble the layer Berlin U-bahn ones.  It would make a fine model, with the lovely wooden EMU’s and the planked platforms.

Another set of top 10 layouts – this time finescale in all scales.  Some lovely modelling here, though I might have chosen a different selection….

My other minor triumph this week was with my trusty laptop.  It was a slightly nerve-wracking 20 minutes getting inside my laptop and changing the internal battery.  The external one just clips in.  They had more or less given up holding charge, so it was a good £60 investment to get new ones.  It had a new keyboard last year after a coffee spill – but there’s still some of the original machine left!  Next question – do I have to get a new machine in October when Microsoft stop supporting Windows 10.  If, as they seem to be promising, they offer another year of updates to 10 for a small sum, I may put off the evil day.

I also opted out of the Bognor show today.  Mr Dawes went – a few good layouts, but the show was a bit cramped and prevented him getting some pictures.  Next post will be reporting on today’s ESNG meeting – we’ll see who turns up!

ESNG meeting – 8 January 2025

And so to 2025.  The first meeting of the year had been delayed a week for perhaps obvious reasons.  However, we might have done better to meet New Year’s Day.  Redhill was just at the northern limit of Wednesday’s snow in the southeast, and it was difficult to know just how much would arrive.  So we went ahead with the meeting, but very aware that we might have to cancel, or just a few would turn up.

We did end up with a hardy five members, but didn’t run any trains.  We settled for tea and chat, and went home about 9pm.  We’ll try again on Sunday.

So no train pictures, but meanwhile, here are a couple of interesting videos..  I think I have posted this lovely film of the Metropolitan Railway in 1910 – the green surroundings are just a little different from today.

Builder or operator, starter or finisher?

My shoulder is still recovering, but I’ve been building a few plastic kits to keep my hand in.  The latest model is an Airfix 1/48 Walrus.  Lovely kit, with just a smear of filler needed here or there.  I’ll build it with the wings folded, and painting is just about under way.

Which rather brings me to my thoughts for the day.  As I’ve built these models, I realise (perhaps the obvious) that I enjoy putting things together and making the models.  I don’t enjoy the final painting process (though it’s worth the effort) and that’s often where I make a mess of things.

Thinking about it, this explains a lot about my model railway interests.  I love planning new layouts.  I quite enjoy building them.  But once they’re done, I don’t operate them very much.  This is probably why I like small railways – they don’t take up much room when I’ve finished!  And it’s a vote in favour of modules – they can come out and run when needed.

Perhaps it’s why I’ve got quite a few projects that have started, but seem to have stalled.  I love the planning, and the start, but the finishing is less interesting.  It’s why I’ve always had difficulty in completing a rake of coaches (I’ve a part complete rake of O gauge plastikard Stroudley 4 wheelers sitting on a shelf – and haven’t the heart to throw them out.)  Perhaps trams really are the way forward!  Only one is needed, rather than a long train.

And it also explains why I’m happy to watch trains go by on ESNG club nights.  I love watching the models pass by, but I’m less interested in controlling them, and I really don’t mind if they’re not my models.

Despite all this, I do enjoy the hobby, and even more meeting up with friends for club nights.  Thank goodness our hobby is so multi-faceted that there’s room for all sorts of people!

Potpourri #1120

Not many constructive thoughts today.  I don’t usually like ‘Top 10″ layout lists, as I usually totally disagree with them.  Which is not surprising, not because I’m an ancient curmudgeon, but because we all have different tastes (even if some are terrible.)  But this top 10 N gauge layouts included some good ones.

They could, of course made a list of best 2mm finescale layout.  This one would have featured.

And they also have a video of one of my favourite O gauge creations – electric traction across the Pennines.

A very neat little US layout – using Tomix minimum radius track.  It would make a good interurban/trolley layout.

A change of subject with some classic aircraft – Croydon Airport in 1934.

Potpourri #1119

First modelling challenge of the year.  It’s really a diesel disguised as a steam loco, but it’s a special train on the Okaido tram system, so a ride on both tram or train would be fine!

Snow may be arriving in the UK today.  Not like this, I hope!

One of the best layouts on the exhibition circuit at the moment.  ‘Drws-Y-Nant’ is a 2mm finescale layout, depicting a section of GWR line between Bala and Dolgellau in mid Wales.  Yes, it’s simple and doesn’t have a procession of trains passing on multiple tracks.  But it’s beautifully made and a lovely spot to watch trains in the landscape.

In contrast, trainspotting on one of the largest O’ gauge layouts around.  In some ways very different from Drws-Y-Nant, but in other ways much the same – a simple (if enormous) main line and a chance to watch the trains go by.

Review of 2024 – and looking into 2025

Happy New Year everyone, and it’s time for a quick look back and forward.  No new year resolutions, though, as they won’t last the month!

2024 was rather interrupted with my broken shoulder, that took out four months of modelling time.  I was pleased to upgrade my N-club airfield module, adding some new details, some drones to stand on the tarmac, and a demonstration by the perimeter fence.  All greatly improved the existing module.  I also made progress on my Minories layout, though I’m still not very happy with it.  Maybe a third incarnation will appear in 2025?  Cliché as it it, I realise that the fun of modelling is the journey as much as the end result.  It’s very pleasing to complete a project, but if you have to scrap something and start again, so be it.

My injury didn’t stop visits to ESNG club meetings, though I didn’t run many trains, just talked a lot.  I’ve also made the most of malingering for a few months, letting everyone else do the lifting and setting up the layout.  I’m back to helping again, though lifting heavy items will still have to be avoided for a month of two more.

As a club, we have met regularly, and though numbers have often been low, we have only failed to set up a layout and run trains on a couple of occasions.  We’ve seen a wide range of models on the tracks, especially when we had an absolute rash of Revolution 59’s in action when the model was released.  (I’ve only seen one ‘Caroline’ in action, though.)  Meetings are also very social, and a number of us have visited exhibitions together.

Despite failing to have our own exhibition, we did take a few modules to TINGS to join in with the German NCI layout.  I was disappointed to miss this with my shoulder, but sent the modules that behaved themselves.  We did, of course, go to Stuttgart and contributed about 32′ of mixed N-club and N-mod modules.  These ran pretty well for the four days, with few derailments.  And the ESNG members who attended had the usual sociable time.

In 2025, what lies in store?  Having got my modelling arm back in action building three aircraft – the Whirlwind that appeared a few posts back, and a Chipmunk and Walrus to come – I need to get back to railways.

At home I really need to get back to my Minories, and I have another small layout project in the planning stage.  And there are a lot of little kits to make.

At ESNG, we need to start another club module – perhaps another N-mod/N-club junction – to work on on Wednesday afternoons.  We had a lot of fun building the fiddleyard together, so a new project would be good.

Of course, there’s always the thought of a club open day or exhibition.  I failed to organise it last year, and that actually worked out well as the show date was just after breaking my shoulder.  But we really ought to do something this year.

I’ll look back at the end of the year and see how much of the above gets done.  Some of it, no doubt.  But the only important thing, really, will be for it to be a lot of fun, making things and running trains with friends.  Hope you all have a good 2025, too.
