A family holiday on Exmoor in 1972 led my father and I to the abandoned ex-LSWR, ex-SR station at Ilfracombe. An interesting two platform station at the end of the double tracked branch from Barnstaple, the station had heavy traffic and large locomotives in the holiday season. I’ve never seen a model of Ilfracombe, but someone must have built it, as it is such a good prototype.

The local Ilfracombe Model Railway Club has built a model of the station, and I’m now planning to build my own.
Did you by any chance take any more photos while you were there? I’m trying to find a ‘side-on’ view of the goods shed so I can make a scale drawing of it.
THe photos you’ve already posted will be a great help, anyway.

Hi there. I found this web site while researching Ilfrachombe railway.
My names Chris from Australia, during Covid lockdowns, I took the time to watch lost railways of England. Ilfrachombe was of particular interest to the point now im focused on everything to do with this station. I’ve started colllecting numerous model steam loco from the era around 1945-its closure. I have collected a lot now Recently purchased rolling stock of the ACE and now compiling a file of any phots of Ilfrachombe, I wish to build a model railway of the station and researching the track plans and its buildings. Hi Chris. The National Library of Scotland has a load of online maps which give reasonably accurate track layouts. I had a quick look and only found pre-1914 layouts, but there may be some others hidden in there – it’s sometimes difficult to navigate around. Wonderful photos, thanks for posting. They will be very helpful for me as I’m planning a 00 layout based on Ilfracombe and Barnstaple Town. There is a large 00 model of Ilfracombe which was built by the local model railway club (try Googling it), and there is also an interesting Twitter account called ‘Ilfracombein00’.
