ESNG meeting – 19 April 2023

Not a bad turnout for the Wednesday after the Open Day – six members attended.  We spent a little time sorting out the show cash balance, and paying members for sales from the club shop.  Finances, to my amazement, look pretty good.  Rather more time was spent tracking down a short circuit on one track.  It turned out not to be the fiddle yard – as suspected – but two wires had come out of a module plug and shorted themselves together.

But we ran plenty of trains before, during and after the wiring excitement.  The usual circuit was set up.

ESNG Open Day 2023 (again)

Three short videos from Allan, showing that trains did move (occasionally.)  I probably should have edited the sound off – I’m sure it wasn’t that noisy!!!!

None of us could fill an ERIC style model of this facility – amazing!

Should this be the next club project?  Maybe not, as I think the members might lose too many trains off the edge of the world.

Or maybe this one?  The real thing, and then the model.

And as for this….

ESNG Open Day 2023

Well, that’s the Open Day done and dusted.  As usual quite hard work, but a success and we had a lot of fun with a glorified running day.  We were unsure how many would turn up through the door, but numbers were reasonable (probably better than I expected) and the hall seemed quite busy at times.  It was also great to have a good number of local families visiting.  As with most of our shows, we seemed to have people who visited and stayed a long time.

Saturday was made easy by having a leisurely set up on Friday afternoon.  Nick and Nigel arrived early afternoon to set up Königshafen – it’s first outing since they visited Stuttgart with us in 2017.

Three of us set up the N-mod layout, and come Saturday morning there were just a few odd jobs to do before opening time.

Our other layout was Sean’s Leonard, another old(ish) friend, but always worth a look.

The N-mod was kept busy running member’s trains.  Simon filled ERIC with American locos.

A few more pictures of Königshafen.

Also there was Richard, with a little display of his modelling interests.  People seemed to especially like the army vehicles.

And Derek and Neil trying (with some success) to sell things.

Overall an excellent day and it was especially good to see a number of old friends and members visiting.

And of course, the Open Day ended with a curry.

Potpourri #1069

Preparation for Saturday’s ESNG Open Day seem to be going well.  We’ve just got to set out the hall and get ready to (hopefully) welcome the punters.

Meanwhile, Dave has been on holiday to the north-east again, and visiting industrial sites, some with narrow railways included….

Finishing all those projects #3

Well, for “finishing” say “doing something I should have done ages ago.”  Modelling over the last couple of weeks has been a complete rearrangement of the railway room.  Most importantly I got fed up with having two work benches in two locations, so the tools I wanted were always on the bench.  They are now side by side (but not much tidier!)

The books and trains swapped over sides….

All my N-club and N-mod modules are now stored under a layout shelf, together with some of my larger pieces of plywood.  50mm rigid plastic pipe makes excellent supports for a high shelf (4’+ and with timber inserts to locate top and bottom.)

And Kuritu is now a little more accessible….

There’s still a bit of final tidying to do (I got rid of two large plastic bags of rubbish and probably more will follow) but I think that I shall do a little modelling now.

And of course the Open Day is coming soon.  The banner went up on the church railings last weekend.

ESNG meeting – 9 April 2023

I wasn’t able to stay at Sunday’s meeting, but there were five or so members present, who had a quiet afternoon playing trains.  Allan channelled his inner Brian, and took this short video….

I was rather taken by this photo, by WJ Naunton, of a WD 2-8-0 headed by a Peak 1-Co-Co-1 and two brake tenders.  Very much a ‘prototype for everything’ picture, and no one would believe you if you ran it on your layout.

And another ‘prototype for everything’ video to finish.

Large and Little

When Allan suggested this title, I thought that he had been trainspotting with Lucas, but it actually referred to a trip down to the Kent & East Sussex Railway, to see its visiting Spam Can.

I’m having a nice time down here on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. 257 Squadron sound great coming up the bank on its return to Tenterden.

Think there were at least 3 film crews down here doing whatever they do. Should be on the South East news tonight.

Here’s the large bit….

And here’s the little….

It looks a great day out.

ESNG meeting – 5 April 2023

A little experiment at this week’s meeting – running trains from 2-9pm, with a pause for fish and chips early evening.  We were also going to do some wiring, but Mr Atfield wasn’t able to get to the meeting with the boards to wire.

Not sure whether this was a success – just the five members attended, with only one extra for the afternoon session.  But the five who were there had a very pleasant afternoon running trains and chatting.  The usual layout was set up and the fiddle yard populated.

Some Swiss trains from Allan….

I seemed to have had a Western Region bias to the trains…..

Die Dawes-Brüder gehen nach Osten #6 – Mainz

Last two days of German pictures are from Allan trainspotting at Mainz.  A good variety of passenger and goods trains, and some impressive graffiti!
