‘Allan, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Stuttgart anymore.’ #2

Meanwhile, somewhere out west…..

Day three a quick trip down to Collets Model Shop in Exmouth. Then spent the afternoon sitting at Dawlish Station watching trains and the works on the sea wall.

Dawlish.

You can’t visit Dawlish without visiting the Black Swans.  But how did he get in here?

Some keen trainspotting going on….

According to Sean there are only 5 full sets of 8 car HST’s left – all with Cross Country. Saw this set heading north. Then sat down watching the building work and missed another set heading south. Not bad 2 out of 5 in one day.

‘Allan, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Stuttgart anymore.’ #1

We should have been enjoying a little visit to Stuttgart this weekend, but having decided that it wasn’t wise to go there due to the high UK rates, we now find that Germany is as bad as the UK (almost.)  And my Ruth says that the south of Germany is the worst (or should that be wurst?)  So it’s probably a good thing that we’ve stayed at home.

But the intrepid Cha(i)rman has equipped himself with a variety of train tickets provided by Ron and headed west rather than east…..

The trouble with today was…. twice today after I put the tablet away a Class 66 went past with freight….. 😭

Train at Purley was 12 minutes late. Bl**dy good start to the day. Changing trains at Clapham, Working and Basingstoke. Then coach replacement at Andover to get to Salisbury. The train to Exeter St. David’s. Walked out of the station hotel was across the square.

But….

Think I must of got on the wrong train somewhere.

And onto day 2…..

First day in Exeter. Thought I do a short journey today to Penzance……..
Lovely ride down but when I got to Penzance is was over cast with fine rain.
Class 43’s everywhere.

Who said I look like the back end of a bus…… LOL

And the scenic bits…..

More to come next time….

ESNG meeting – 17 November 2021

Bumper evening this evening – 11 members present!  The Treasurer was beside himself!!!  Here we have the usual suspects, some showing how not to do social distancing.

And with lots of members came lots of trains, including….

Great Western splendour and Channel Tunnel maintenance from Derek Atfield.  The Channel Tunnel didn’t seem to be running too well; Derek then realised that it was a dummy loco…..

c1

More pre-grouping splendour…..

Japanese passenger trains, old and new……

Modern UK.  The HST special editions look especially good…..

American goods, together with a realistic looking crash. (Simon had just put the gondola there, but it looked as if it had fallen down the embankment.)

And more wise words from Paul….

Another East Surrey N Gauge Group meeting this evening with lots of attendees. I took another varied selection of trains. The JR West 500-7000 Series ‘Plarail’, the EF81 with the Type 14 coach set in Rainbow livery, a D51 with mail coach set, 2 x 3 car JR Central 373 and a 12 coach JR Central 300 Series Shinkansen. All ran perfectly!

More ill gotten gains

I recently had a text from a lady down in Smallfield, whose father, at the age of 98 (!!!) had decided to give up ‘N’ gauge modelling – having started it in his 80’s.  After looking at what he had collected, I put in an offer, and came home on Monday with an interesting load of items.

Perhaps the best finds were these – all in very good condition.  A Dapol Terrier (that will probably be kept), a Farish NSE 101 DMU, three Stanier coaches, and the ‘Day at the Races’ set (stock only.)

Plus a load of scenic items, tools, and some Peco wagons.  I also took his layout, about 3′ x 2′.  It’s not really useable, as you can see that some of the tracks are laid too close together.  But I think a lot of the track can be reused, and the board might be the basis for another micro-layout.

For all it’s shortcomings, I hope that I can keep building things this good when I am approaching 90!!

I suspect that I shall keep some of the models, and see if I can sell the rest at ESNG or our next show.

ESNG meeting – 14 November 2021

I didn’t get to this afternoon’s meeting, and Brian was also missing, so no epic video this time.  But Paul gave his usual summary on Facebook…..

Back from an enjoyable afternoon playing trains with the East Surrey N Gauge Group. All went well until an American troop train clashed with a French TGV on a rather tight bend causing a serious derailment. The Japanese and British trains also running at the time were unaffected. I had a mixture of stock running including a Nankai Rapi’t set, 2 x DF200 on the inspection special, Thomas The Tank Japanese style the JR West 285 sleeper set and the production version of the JR Central N700S.

Why was I missing?  We had a delightful surprise visit from from Berlin by our eldest daughter.  Maxine knew nothing about it, and was totally shocked having been lured out to breakfast to celebrate Michael’s birthday of a couple of weeks ago……

I’d received a one-time guess pass from the National Trust, so in the afternoon we drove over to Sir Winston Churchill’s house, Chartwell.  Ruth, the artistic one, appreciated his studio, and then did a little scrumping of Sir Winston’s apples.

More eating in the evening.  Only The Ruth Bartlett can blag a plate off her favourite Indian restaurant!

20211113_194842

More fun and games today. We passed on another breakfast after overeating yesterday. We collected Ruth after church and met up with Chelle for dim sum in Croydon. Ruth attacked this with some enthusiasm – you can’t get dim sum this good (or cheap) in Germany.

I have a picture of Maxine and Chelle, but it’s not a good one (Maxine is eating her birthday treat chicken’s feet) and I shall be in big trouble if I post it……  After lunch Chelle put Ruth on a train at East Croydon to go and surprise a few more friends in Hackney.

20211114_142234 All in all, a delightful weekend.

Now, here’s a kit worth building!  Slightly bigger than ‘N’ gauge though.

Did I really buy all these books?

Wondering why I haven’t got much modelling done recently, I decided to have a good tidy up of my books and models.  I started in our lounge, and collected all the railway books that were lurking in various corners, to return to my bookcases in the railway room.  I was shocked to see this pile that accumulated on the sofa.  Perhaps half of them were old ones brought downstairs for reference or reading.  The rest were purchases over the past 18 months – some new, some second hand, and a few special offers that couldn’t be resisted.  I can totally blame covid and lockdowns for all this shopping!

There are definite themes here.  Isle of Wight to the left.  Southern steam in the middle.  Southern electrics to the right.  Plus some other odds and ends such as the Somerset and Dorset and the Metropolitan Railway.

20211105_132109

I remember a quote that is actually quite accurate for reference books – “I have read all of some of them and some of all of them.”  That’s true of my railway books (and for that matter my theological and ornithological ones!)  There are some that I have read repeatedly and give me great pleasure.  Others were bought for reference, and I have used them for a particular model or planning exercise.

I just hope that the rest of you aren’t this bad!!!

ESNG meeting – 3 November 2021

Sorry, I’ve missed a few days blogging – all well in the household, but it seems to have been rather busy.  Too many breakfasts out, I think.  This is Redhill aerodrome on a cold, misty, autumnal morning.

20211102_084050

But on Wednesday evening, it was time for the usual ESNG meeting.  Just the five members attended, but we had a pleasant and relaxed evening running trains.

20211103_194720

The usual Japanese selection from Paul.  Thomas-san also made an appearance, but he’s had quite enough media coverage on this blog recently…

Multiple units old and new…..

20211103_204705

The Farish Blue Pullman is certainly one of their best models.  I wonder how long it will be before someone brings out the HST version?

20211103_195744

NSE and Railtrack…..

To finish, here’s how to travel south, 1930’s style….

ESNG meeting – 24 October 2021

Seven members turned out on a autumnal Sunday afternoon to play trains.  A fun afternoon with good company, and cakes provided by the Cha(i)rman – Christmas cupcakes with a sell-by date of 27/10/2021.  We have to record that they failed to get to the 27th….

The regulars…..

An interesting 3D printed early Santa Fe diesel from Simon….

Passenger and freight, Japanese style, from Paul….

Allan was somewhere in Germany….

Brian with trains from the UK and the Netherlands….

And Brian recorded the highlights for us…..

The day before Brian had filmed the prototype for his Class 73 over at Tonbridge….

Potpourri #1038

Now here’s a modelling challenge for you – lots of water involved!

It makes the Volks Railway depressingly normal…

I do like Jago Hazzard – so here’s his take on the ‘Drain’.  Useless fact – the units on the Waterloo and City are one of the few that don’t have windscreen wipers – it never drains down there.

Back next time with a record of Sunday’s ESNG meeting.
