Another project completed….

As a viable alternative to Ron’s drinker’s guide to Germany, here’s another project that I actually finished today.

You may recall, I was strengthening my N-mod loop and adding new, folding legs.

Here’s the end result.  The leg stays are cheap and cheerful ones for folding tables off Amazon.  I’m not sure that they are strong enough for weekly club use, but for a few days a year at exhibitions, I think that they’ll do the job.  The board is much more stable now, and despite the added wood, still quite light.

Next job – perhaps complete the rewiring of my N-club boards.

Last Saturday, before the snow arrived, I believed Brian’s email and late afternoon took myself off to Reigate station to see Tangmere again.  I thought that the steam effects would be good on a freezing afternoon.  Well, no Tangmere (the service was cancelled), but I did spot a few more common local trains before retreating to the warmth of the car.

I’m only here for the Glühwein #1

It’s been a matter of weeks since Ron last went overseas – but he’s been on his travels again. He claims it’s to visit the German Christmas markets, but Allan and I think it’s for the glühwein (with the odd strudel thrown in.) We have the evidence, that will be presented below.  Allan forwarded me most of these photos….

“First of the trip – The only reason he goes to Germany “

g1

And at the Boulevard Cafe Quedlinburg….

“Look what else he found……..”

g2

“He found more Jon…… (the last one has rum in it)

“He found some more. Dolce Fredo Eiscafe at Leipzig Hbf.”

g6

“Will be breath testing him on his return.”

g7

“He must be getting tipsy after all these Gluevines.”

As predicted No 7. (Editor’s note – we lost count somewhere between number 4 and number 7.)

g8

Allan: “And even on his way home he finds some…..”.
Ron: “Get breathalyser ready. No 8 picked up during layover in Cologne.”

Layover sounds about right to me – or maybe fall over?

g9

And here are a few of Christmas markets, just to prove Ron did visit one or two….

Next post, we’ll get back to the more serious stuff.  I have some railway photos from Ron, including some with a lot of snow.

ESNG meeting – 11 December 2022

A freezing cold Sunday afternoon attracted a hardy five members, plus Chelsea Pensioner Richard (last seen in Stuttgart) and Ron (back from Germany and already queuing for his curry.)

Dodgy looking lot!

20221211_162205

Not that many trains running, as a lot of time was spent talking.

Mr Atfield was fettling a TGV (if that’s the right word for TGV’s.)

20221211_144811

Allan was getting the milk from the West Country onto his milk float.

20221211_144826

I was running a parcels train.

20221211_144940

Richard tested a delightful Austrian rake picked up at Stuttgart.  New model, old prototype.

20221211_162226

A rather more modern passenger train from Brian.

20221211_162316

And a Class 47 pretending to be a Brush 4?  There has been no livery better than the two-tone green.

20221211_164354

Finally, Mr App’s goods train.

20221211_162511

Mid-afternoon, Derek (Apps) and I returned to working on the new fiddle yard.  A couple of wires swapped around and adjustment of microswitches means that one of the two end boards is fully operational.  It should be easy to complete the wiring on the second, as it’s a mirror image of the first.

By the time we packed up, the snow had arrived, though it had eased up after a post-railway curry,  I understand that a number of keen railway workers had to push Ron up the slope from the curry-house and station…..

And being a Sunday, here’s Brian’s video of proceedings…..

Stuttgart – 2022 #6 – A postscript

I thought that I had finished, but Duncan sent me some more pictures (with a leaning towards narrow gauge) and comments.

Snow scene of the Harz narrow gauge in 6.5mm gauge. Interesting night-sky backscene with iluminated stars. Overall winner of the public vote.

Harz

Swiss narrow-gauge rack railway module by Michael Bange. Incredibly steep, but beautiful running using magnets and steel below the track for extra adhesion.

Rack

Road layout by Andreas Timmer, with no trains at all! Lots of Faller Car-System vehicles, and the occasional radio-controlled one too.

AnTi

A large North-American city N-Trak module by Markus Schiavo. It contains a huge number of scenes from famous films and TV.

City

A view of the two large Helixes that allow the public to enter the area.

Tor

Beautifully detailed module of Pavia Station in Italy.

Pavia

A couple of views of the huge N-Scale layout of Stuttgart HBf in the 1960s/70s. This is now publically viewable in its new home opposite the real station. As the station is under heavy building work (turning the tracks 90 degrees), this model will provide a fascinating record of how the area used to be.

View of a container train on the Swiss Narrow-Gauge modules. For ten minutes each day, the sun shone down on the module, allowing this photo!

RhB

This one is of the 4.5mm gauge model by Lemiso. Ran beautifully all week, and I will probably spend a lot of money on the models!

VIIk

And Duncan also sent me a link this other facet of the show:

I found this short video from Stuttgart you might like. It shows my Oxford Diecast radio-controlled ambulance on the AnTi-Cars layout. It’s harder to drive than it looks!

ESNG meeting – 7 December 2022

A long afternoon this Wednesday, as we decided to have an afternoon working on the new fiddle yard before the evenings meeting.  And we made a lot of progress – a lot of steps forward, and just the few backwards.

By the end of the afternoon, we’d connected up the new power box to one end of the layout, tested the points, and run a train.  There are a few electrical hiccups (expected, as I wired it all up), but we are getting close to the thing being operational.

Five of us worked the afternoon, then paused for fish and chips collected by the Chairman from our local shop.  Another four joined us for the evening, making a busy time.  However, we’d worn ourselves out by the end of the evening, and it was cold outside, so we packed up before 9:30pm,

20221207_19263120221207_195516

The Blue Spot fish train was first out round the layout.

20221207_192708

Derek’s KCRC Kowloon-Canton train kept uncoupling, but brought back memories of tracking the real thing along the Tai Po Highway.

20221207_194245

Ian and Simon were testing locos.  Ian now has a long repair list!

Meeting again on Sunday, and I might just carry on wiring in the corner!

Meanwhile, at home, I’ve finished a box for my Bus Garage Junction module.  As usual I built it around the module, ensuring that it will fit in future….

Stuttgart – 2022 #5

Final pictures from Stuttgart, with the other layouts and modular systems.

I’m not sure from the hall plan whether these are modules or standalone layouts – but both are lovely models.  I think my show favourite is this model of the classic Rhine scene with rail, road, river and vineyards.  I’ve seen this done before, but never with such ‘deep’ scenery.

This long Belgian layout of the station at Voneche also has some excellent scenic modelling.

And Pauline’s Millfield, with a very British fiddleyard!

There are always some N-track North American modules to see – and they usually do an awesome chili, too, for the Thursday evening social.  Mixes well with the Danish raw curried herring….. perhaps?

And in recent years N-m has become a regular exhibit.

A slight reprise of that excellent snow scene in N-m..

These T-track modules appear most years, but they’re still fun to look at.

A bit of a mega post this, but I need to finish this series of posts!  Duncan sent me a link to another facet of the show:

I found this short video from Stuttgart you might like. It shows my Oxford Diecast radio-controlled ambulance on the AnTi-Cars layout. It’s harder to drive than it looks!

So that’s Stuttgart 2022.  We hope to be there in person in 2023 with a full ESNG complement!

Stuttgart – 2022 #4

I’ve often seen criticism of the Stuttgart layout and modular systems in general that (a) it’s unrealistic and visually poor to have different scenery from different locations on adjacent modules, and (b) that the total mix of trains is not right.  These are, of course, valid points, but I think you have to look at modular railways as just one facet of the hobby where (a) there can be a wide range of railway features modelled and each section can be looked at alone and appreciated in its own right (although NCI do specify scenery colours in their module standards), and (b) it’s Rule 1, so any train can run – half the fun is not knowing what is coming next.  And of course, it does allow very large modular layouts to be set up, far larger than we at ESNG could ever imagine.

So here are a few more of Allan’s pictures, of modules including…..

Stations….

Yards…..

Main lines…..

Junctions…..

Single track branches….

And sometimes the downright peculiar, with this French glowing snow shed!

We’ll have some other layouts next time.

Stuttgart – 2022 #3

One of the pleasures of the Stuttgart meet is operating a section of track – without any complex junctions and other pointwork.  You need to be alert enough to spot trains coming, and whether there is room down the line to take your train, but few mental gymnastics are needed.  And you enjoy a procession of different trains; mainly European, but with others thrown in for good measure.  On Saturday, that’s exactly what Allan did…..

Spend most day behind Richard Oliver’s layout, watching the trains going over the bridge.

And if you are very lucky, the Christmas train goes by…..

20221118_17533520221118_175338

Moving rapidly on to a few module pictures.  There are always some good bridges on show.

And how people deal with their end loops is also interesting – from the simple to the intricate!

The waterwings!

More modules and other bits and pieces next time!

Stuttgart – 2022 #2

For the rest of the week, I’ll post some of Allan’s photos from the N-Club International meet at the Stuttgart Messe.  It will be a bit of a photo dump, as I wasn’t there, and I may confuse a few items.

Today we’ll first take an overview of the hall, showing just how large the N gauge display is. In the past there has been mainly one large modular layout, but with the increasing use of DCC, and with single track and narrow gauge layouts, the tendency now is for a number of modular setups and some stand-alone layouts.  But either way, it’s BIG.

IMG_3768IMG_3777

Fortunately most module layouts are set out to allow one to establish a ‘base camp’ in the middle for operation, relaxation (though the chairs are hard) and tea, coffee, or something a little stronger.

The next few shots could be described as ‘men at work.’  Operating a junction like this does my head in!!  After a couple of hours I’ve no idea which train is going where….

IMG_3794

These next few also show some of the excellent modular modelling on show.

Sometimes they look happy…..  And sometimes they look a little concerned….

Not forgetting the ladies, of course (watching her module to check it worked – of course it did.)

More next time!

ESNG meeting – 27 November 2022

A busy Sunday afternoon, with nine members present.  Good to see both Chairman and Treasurer back in circulation.  And also a cake to celebrate Lucas’ birthday.

The members were stocking the fiddle yard ready to run.  After said birthday, Stuttgart and Warley, a lot of new trains made an appearance.  Brian appears to be changing the points with a real flourish….

Derek’s 44 tonner takes on Simons box cars….

20221127_14364120221127_150114

Some long trains, including a Pendolino and three Kato 800 class units running at the same time!

Alan’s haul from Stuttgart….

20221127_144007

Old and new.

20221127_150714

Lucas’ British goods….

20221127_143622

And ancient German passenger…..

20221127_15013320221127_150254

A German single unit DMU….

20221127_155605

The INGANET 2022 wagons from Stuttgart….

20221127_165214

And Brian took his usual video (though I think that he ran out of recording time.)
